HOW TO PUT ON YOUR KARATE GI?

How to Put on your Gi

1. Put on your Gi top like you would a jacket.
2. Ensure your right side flap is folded towards your left side first and tie the strings that are attached together.
3. Then fold your left side flap to your right side tying the strings together.
4. The end result is that your left side flap should be on the outside.

How to tie your Obi

1. Your Belt is called an “Obi”.
2. The ends of your belt are called the “tangs”.
3. Your Karate uniform is called a “Gi”.
4. Getting started, there is a top and bottom to your belt. Hold if flat up and down and the side without the seam is the bottom of the belt, ensure the smooth side of the belt is on top.
5. Find the end of your belt and there will be a tag, fold the belt exactly in half with the tag starting on your left side of your body.
6. Place the middle of your belt over your belly button, and wrap the belt around your waist, sliding the side on your right underneath the left side as it comes around so that it is on top of each other.
7. Switch your grip by sliding what was on the left side over top of the right side around to the front.
8. Holding both ends of the belt, the end with the tag should be on your right side now.
9. As the ends of your belt come to the front the right side should be the side with the “tag” fold it on top of the other end making an “X”.
10. Now your right side (with the tag on the belt) fold it underneath both the layers of your belt with one end sticking upwards towards your heart and the other end facing downwards towards the floor. Pull the ends of the belt sideways.
11. Now with the side you just folded with the tag on the belt hold it with your left hand and place it overtop of the right side making an “X” and then under. Your belt should sit just above your hips.

Why do we wear Japanese Uniforms and not Kung Fu Uniforms?

This is a very common question as our style incorporates Shaolin Kung Fu in its teachings, yet we are called “karate”. This is mainly due to two reasons. One – the first thing you learn is japanese style Karate, usually until you hit green belt. After that your training shifts more and more into kung fu and jiu-jitsu. The Second – practicality. Since Karate outfits are very durable and strong, and since our style does use grabs, holds and throws, practicing with a kung fu outfit may result in tearing, and thus we use the stronger japanese karategi.

Uniforms – the foundation for success

The moment a student begins the martial journey, he or she receives a uniform and a white belt. It is a special moment, and you can see it on the student’s face. This sets the foundation for the entire martial journey. Here are just a few reasons why.

A symbol of commitment
The uniform demonstrates a student’s commitment to the martial journey. People who learn commitment at an early age are better able to persevere when life gets difficult. High school, college, graduate school, and a career all require commitment. So do relationships, friendships, and parenthood. Those who remain committed to their values, to the people in their lives, and to a career path, tend to live longer, happier, healthier lives. Teaching your child about commitment sets the foundation for success.

A symbol of unity
The uniform is a symbol of unity. It says, “we are one, and we are doing this together.” When a child connects to positive, goal-oriented peers in a family-friendly environment, he or she is more likely to make good decisions later on in life. Soldiers, police officers, and firefighters – heroes always seem to be in uniforms. For millennia the uniform has helped us draw strength from each other, and build the courage to face the challenges ahead. Not wearing the uniform sends the message, “It’s all about me.” Wearing it says, “For this hour, it’s all about us.”

When a child wears their uniform, they see, hear, and feel that this space is different. The student gets the message, “I am here for a special reason. This isn’t like my other activities.” Every student of the martial arts, from Grandmaster DeMasco to the newest white belt, bows on the way into the dojo. Similarly, everyone wears a uniform. It builds a foundation for a student to accomplish things they can’t accomplish anywhere else.

A smart idea

Uniforms are just a smart idea. We move, jump, run, tumble, fall, grab, strike, block, and roll around in Kung Fu. Grandmaster hand-selected this uniform to stand up to the rigors of martial training. Lapels and seams have multiple stitching. The 7 oz. material is light enough for comfort, but strong enough to withstand being grabbed, rolling around, or kicking over the head. While the uniform represents important martial values, it is also excellent workout gear.
